Manufacturer's Shingle Warranties: The Basics
What's covered:
Typically, only manufacturers defects are covered; items like significant granule loss, premature curling, cracking, and discoloration. Leaks and ice dam issues are not covered. These items would fall under the installer's workmanship warranty.
Initial Coverage:
Most shingle manufactures warrant their shingles and will reimburse you for labor, materials, and dump fees during the first 5 years. A few manufacturers may offer a 7 year initial warranty period.
Remaining coverage:
After the initial warranty period, manufactures will offer a prorated claim settlement on the materials only. In other words, if your 30 year shingles are 15 years old, they will only offer you 50% of the cost of the shingles. This would not include the labor or dump fees. If you can get copy of a warranty, they do spell out the mathematical calulation they use to pay a claim.
How To File A Claim:
Most shingle manufaturers require two shingles to be removed from your roof, pictures of the problem areas, pictures of your roof ventilation, a copy of your roofing invoice showing the date, materials used, and the amount installed, along with a claim form. Once you submit these items, they will review your case, make a decision and notify you in 6 - 8 weeks.
