Copper Fittings Demystified
Although the underground drainage system is a central part of getting waste water away from any building, it’s important not to forget how the clean water gets to that building. This is where copper fittings make their very important appearance.
With the various shapes, sizes and fittings, it is very understandable that people can often become completely baffled by the catalogue of products there are out there. However this blog looks to demystify these vital plumbing components and outline a clear understanding of what they do and how they work.
The easiest way to break down the seemingly never-ending catalogue of copper fittings is to group them by the way in which they are fitted for purpose:
Solder Ring Fittings
Within the plumbing and guttering supplies industry, these fittings can also be known as Yorkshire fittings. This is where the copper fitting contains some already cooled solder within the inside of the connecting area. When the fitting is connected to the adjoining pipework, cleaning solution along with heat is applied for the pre-placed solder to melt and attach to the newly adjoined pipework. Once the solder has cooled, it will harden to form a watertight bond between the pipework and fitting.
End Feed Fittings
Almost identical to solder ring fittings, the end feed fittings do not contain the solder within the piping; instead the plumber will have a reel of solder in which is then heated and applied to the fitting where needed.
Compression Fittings
This type of fitting is typically made of brass with the use of a thin copper band to make the join watertight. This fitting uses mechanical pressure in order to tightly make the join and squeeze the copper band into position.
Push-Fit Fittings
This particular design of fitting uses a stop-ring mechanism which grabs and forms a watertight bond when the specially designed plastic pipes are fed through the fitting. Upon the flow of water through the pipes, it strengthens the bond ensuring its strength and watertight feature.
